Michigan Theatre’s opening day was on January 5, 1928. Angelo Poulos wanted to construct a grand movie theatre that would one day be a historical monument. He hired Maurice Finkel, an architect to design the theatre. There was a place for a pit orchestra to play live music during the times when there was no film music. Michigan Theatre held ballets, operas, and live performances but above all the rest, it played movies. During the mid 1950’s when the television became popular, like the rest of the theatres across the world, Michigan Theatre needed to find a way to attract more people to come out. One of the ways they tried was remodeling the place. But in the late 1970’s, the theatre was about to close down. The community continuously fought to save the theatre and was eventually successful in 1982. Since then, the theatre has gone through various renovations. The Michigan Theatre is the home of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra.
